Sara Echocardiogram Check

Yesterday, Saturday at 4.30pm was Sara's echocardiogram check at Kelana Jaya Medical Center with Dr. Zarin for heart murmuring. This is Sara's second check with him since last August 2008. As he had advised, next check is somewhere in six months time.

What is heart murmur??
Also called: Continuous Murmur, Cardiac Murmur, Systolic Murmur, Murmur, Diastolic Murmur

A heart murmur is an abnormal heart sound that results from the turbulent flow of blood through the heart. Heart murmurs are usually detected by a physician using a stethoscope to listen to the heartbeat. Most heart murmurs are harmless or “innocent,” which means they are not associated with a disease or condition of the heart. Many, if not most, children will have a heart murmur at some point in their lives.However, heart murmurs may also be the result of an underlying heart condition, such as the narrowing of one of the heart’s four valves (valvular stenosis) that has been present from birth (congenital heart disease).


The heart is a beating muscle that pumps blood throughout the body. Inside the heart, four valves open and shut in a precise sequence to keep the blood moving in the right direction. A malformed or damaged valve may not close properly, allowing blood to leak backwards. This condition is called valvular regurgitation.

Thin, fibrous strands called chordae tendineae open and close the flaps, or cusps, of each valve. The chordae tendineae are anchored within the ventricles. When the ventricles contract, the mitral and tricuspid valves slap shut while the aortic and pulmonic valves swing open.

If there is not enough tension on the chordae tendineae, the cusps may not close properly, and blood may leak backwards, or regurgitate. In this example, the cusps of the mitral valve are prolapsing, or failing to close properly. Blood is leaking back into the left atrium from the ventricle.
